Wildlife and history dating back 8000 years
The peat bog is located on the western slope of Bieśce, in the middle of the mysterious Bystrica Mountains. The depth, or as we should say the pulp of peat, here reaches 8 meters. The peat bog was formed due to a specific substrate - impervious rocks. Marbles and sandstones deposited on gneiss, thanks to the horizontal terrain make it a place practically without drainage.
The entire 270 ha peat bog is formed by two basins: “Topielisko” and “Black Swamp”, while the nature reserve includes the Topielisko and only a fragment of the Black Swamp. It is worth adding that the charms and uniqueness of this place were already appreciated at the beginning of the 20th century - the first, small reserve was created here already in 1919. Some equate the Zelenets peat bog to the Siberian taiga, and indeed there is something for sure. The fact that this place was created about 8000 years ago is even more exciting!
Vegetation as from another world
The extraordinary flora of the peatland — mosses, sedges, sunflowers, dwarf pines and spruces — creates a unique landscape, unseen elsewhere in the Sudetenland. Thanks to special wooden footbridges, tourists can safely move around the peat bog without harming its sensitive ecosystem.
This place is literally buzzing with life. Dozens of species of insects, birds and plants create an amazing mosaic of biodiversity here.
